Ultrafiltration is a low-pressure membrane technique used to remove colloidal and particulate materials, high molecular weight chemicals, bacteria, and viruses from a feed stream. Ultrafiltration is less expensive to run than reverse osmosis and nanofiltration because it operates at a lower pressure and has bigger pores and high permeability with less osmotic effects. In the industrial setting, ultrafiltration is frequently employed as a pretreatment for other types of purification.
