Unwanted sediments, color, algae (which can give off a taste and smell), and other dangerous creatures can all be found in raw water. The purpose of the Water Filtration Plant (WFP) is to eliminate this unwanted material and provide drinking-quality water. The settled sludge is gathered and directed toward hoppers at one end of each of the three sedimentation tanks by a sludge rake that scrapes the bottom of each tank. From here, it is periodically discharged into the drained sludge lagoons. It is possible to dry and remove the sludge. The water is run through sand filters, which gather smaller particles, once the heavy floc has settled. Periodically, the filters are backwashed, which eliminates the fine debris that the filters may have caught and potentially clog them, by pushing a mixture of water and air up through the sand layers. One of the clear water tanks made of reinforced concrete beneath the main structure receives the filtered water. It is treated with fluoride to promote community oral health and chlorine to eradicate any potentially dangerous organisms when it reaches these storage tanks.
