Wastewater is used water that needs to be treated before being discharged into another body of water in order to prevent additional contamination of water sources. There are many different sources of wastewater. Wastewater is everything that you flush down the toilet or pour down the drain. Runoff and rainwater from the streets, combined with other contaminants, finally make their way to a wastewater treatment facility. Industrial and agricultural sources of waste water are other potential sources. Some wastewaters are more challenging to treat than others; for instance, industrial wastewater can be challenging to handle, whereas home wastewater is often straightforward to treat (although treating domestic waste is becoming increasingly challenging, because the number of pharmaceuticals and personal care items in home wastewater has increased.
