Raw water contains unwanted sediments, color, algae (which can produce a taste and smell), and other harmful organisms. To remove this unwanted material and produce water that is safe to drink, the Water Filtration Plant was built. The first step in the treatment of wastewater is screening. Large items like diapers, nappies, and even broken bottles, bottle caps, plastics, and rags that could obstruct or harm equipment are taken out during the screening. Solid organic matter must be separated from wastewater. This is accomplished by putting wastewater in large settlement tanks and letting the solids settle to the bottom of the tanks. Large scrapers at the bottom of these spherical tanks continuously scrape the tank floor, forcing the sludge to the center of the tank where it is pumped away for further treatment. The remaining water is transported via pumps to a secondary treatment facility. Now, the water is pumped into large, rectangular holding tanks. In order to break down the microscopic sludge particles that escaped the sludge scraping process, the air is forced into the water. After that, the water is pumped through a settling tank. The amount of sludge at the tank bottom rises as a result of bacterial activity. Once more scraped and gathered, sludge is used for treatment. Pollutants and hazardous substances are now almost entirely absent from the water. To remove any remaining debris, water is allowed to flow over a wall before being filtered through a bed of sand.
