The process of forcing a liquid against a semipermeable membrane by hydrostatic pressure is known as ultrafiltration (UF). Water and low molecular weight solutes pass through while suspended solids and high molecular weight solutes are retained. Except for the size of the molecules retained, ultrafiltration is similar to reverse osmosis, microfiltration, and nanofiltration.
